"Turning the Tables"

Story by Greg Klein & Ted Alben   Teleplay by Tim Minear
Directed by Ray Austin

First US Airdate 22 March 1992   Episode 3.20

[Closeup shot of a bouquet of flowers.  The camera pan to the right to show a woman handing the flowers to an older woman.  A man standing next to the older woman hands the other woman a coin.]

Man
Señora, gracias.

[The man and woman walk away into the plaza which is filled with market stalls and people.]

Voice [off camera]
There he goes!

[A man in brown clothes wearing a headband runs across the plaza.  Two men on horseback and two lancers on foot chase after the man, knocking over stalls.  Women scream.  One of the lancers grabs at the man but the man runs away.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern where Don Alejandro stands with his arm around the shoulders of a man in a gray suit.  Diego stands opposite them.]

Voice [off camera]
Stop that savage!

[Diego looks out into the plaza with a concerned expression.  A man with red hair brandishes a sword as he rides around the plaza on horseback.]

Man with Red Hair
Get him away!  Shoot him!  Shoot him!

[The man with the headband continues to dart around the plaza.  Lancers fire their muskets.  Women scream again.  The man with the headband runs into two lancers then turns and runs away.  Diego pretends to fall off the tavern porch and knocks down three lancers.  The man with the headband looks over his shoulder then runs away.]

Diego [as he lies atop the lancers]
Terribly sorry, gentlemen. [He gets hit by one of the lancers trying to get up.]  Ooh.

[He and the lancers struggle as Victoria watches from the porch while holding a pitcher.]

Diego [as he tries to keep the lancers pinned down]
My fault.  Sorry.

[The man with the headband is cornered by the red haired man who holds a sword to his throat.  Two lancers come up behind the man with the headband and grab his arms.  Victoria runs over toward them.]

Victoria
What has Shone done?

[Don Alejandro and Diego walk over to join Victoria.

Man with Red Hair
He was born of a race that God despises.

Don Alejandro
I'm always amazed when people assume that God despises anyone [He clenches his teeth angrily.] who is not like them.

Diego [quietly]
Father. . .

Man with Red Hair
And who might you be, Señor?

Don Alejandro [angrily]
I, Señor, am Alejandro de la Vega, a citizen of this pueblo.

Man with Red Hair
And clearly an Indian sympathizer.  I am Don Jose Alfonso Infante Escanto.

de Soto [walking up to Escanto's right]
Don Jose is here on a commission from the King himself, de la Vega.  He has been appointed special emissary in charge of our Indian problem.

Victoria
Oh, really?  I wasn't aware we had an Indian problem.

de Soto [while glaring at Victoria]
As a matter of fact, starting today, no Indian is allowed to set foot inside pueblo de Los Angeles.

[Shone struggles with the lancers holding his arms.]

Don Alejandro [angrily]
If they cannot trade here, how can they eat?

de Soto
They are an inferior people.  They cannot be allowed to pollute our. . .Spanish bloodlines.  This one is clearly in violation of the new edict.  Take him away!

Shone [looking first at Escanto then at de Soto]
Someday you will both know the agony you bring to my people.

de Soto
If I were you, Señor, I would worry about the agony of incarceration in my jail.

Shone [to de Soto]
You think you are better than us, Alcalde.  You think you're a big man. [De Soto smirks.] But someday. . . someday you will shrivel up with hate!

[Escanto hits Shone up side the head with the hilt of his sword.]

Shone
Uuh!

[Don Alejandro starts forward.  Diego grabs him on the arm as Victoria hides her face in her hands.]

Don Alejandro [as the two lancers drag Shone past him]
Diego. . .

[Don Alejandro and Victoria then turn their attention to Escanto.]

Escanto [sarcastically]
So, someday we will know the pain we inflict on his people.  This savage is a poet. . .and a prophet, it seems.

[He starts laughing mockingly.  De Soto joins in as Diego glares at them.  A man standing to the left of Escanto's horse, hits it on its belly with a stick.  The horse rears and Escanto falls off, hitting the ground with a thud.]

Escanto [off camera]
Uuh!

[Don Alejandro and Diego go over to where Escanto lies on the ground as do Victoria and de Soto, who crouch down beside him.]

de Soto [worriedly]
Emissary!  Speak to me!

Escanto [obviously in pain as he reaches down to grab his right leg]
My leg!

de Soto
Does anyone know how to mend a broken leg?

Diego [quietly to Don Alejandro]
I think I'll volunteer.

Don Alejandro
Well, it's the Christian thing to do, I suppose.  But still, the man's a bigot, Diego.

[Diego crouches down and places his hands on Victoria and de Soto's shoulders, moving them aside.]

Diego
Allow me.

[He puts his hands on Escanto's leg.]

Escanto
Aah!  Aah!

[He then passes out.]

Diego [insincerely]
I'm sorry.

[He rolls his eyes innocently as Victoria, de Soto, and Don Alejandro look on.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]

[Closeup shot of Escanto lying in a bed with his eyes closed.  He opens his eyes and turns his head.  The camera pans to the end of the bed where Diego and Don Alejandro are standing there looking at him.]

Escanto
You two. . .  [He tries to get up but winces with pain.] It's my leg.

Don Alejandro
The Alcalde, as usual, exaggerated the situation.  It's not broken.

Diego
Merely wrenched.

Escanto
Well, that is good news. [He takes a couple of deep breaths and looks around the room.] What is this place?

Don Alejandro
This place is our hacienda.  Unfortunately, the pueblo is without a doctor at present. [He turns to look at Diego.] However, my son has volunteered his services.

Escanto
What would you two help me?  You're against everything I stand for.

Don Alejandro
That's true.  However, you won't be standing for anything until your leg gets better.

Diego
Our home is your home, Excellency.  We hope before you leave, you will see the light.

Escanto [confused]
See the light?

Diego [turning to Don Alejandro]
Um, open the drapes, Father, and let the emissary see the light.

Don Alejandro
Of course, son.

[He walks behind Diego and moves aside the curtains of a nearby window.  Diego smiles as Felipe walks up beside him, carrying a glass on a tray.]

Diego
Thank you, Felipe.

[Diego takes the tray from Felipe and walks around to the right side of Escanto's bed then sits down on the mattress.]

Diego [holding out the glass of red liquid on the tray]
Here, drink this. . .  An old family remedy to ease your pain and help you sleep.

[Escanto takes the glass, eyes it suspiciously, then drinks.  He sets the glass back on the tray.]

Don Alejandro
Good.

Escanto
That red devil will pay dearly for this.

Diego
You don't think what he said had anything to do with your injury, do you?

Escanto
What?  About me feeling the agony of his people?  Of course not.  I merely meant he screamed so loud, he frightened my horse.

Diego
Ah.

Escanto
I'm going to initiate a new edict. . .  Any Indian found in this pueblo will not just be jailed, first he will be  publicly flogged. [Diego and Don Alejandro look at each in dismay.] These savages must be treated. . .like children. . . [His eyes start to droop and his words slur.] They require a firm hand. . .

[His eyes close and his head lolls to one side as he falls asleep.]

Don Alejandro
I don't know, Diego.  Your plan sounds good in theory.  But this fellow's bigotry. . .it runs deep.

Diego [turning to look at Don Alejandro]
The deeper it runs, the deeper the impact this will have. [He holds up the empty glass.] Besides, you heard him, if we don't do something, he'll start a reign of terror in this pueblo.

Don Alejandro
I think you're right.  How long will this plan of transformation take?

Diego
Several doses over several days.

Don Alejandro
Hmm. . . [He looks over at the sleeping Escanto.] Sleep tight, your Excellency.

[He takes the glass from Diego and sniffs it, then moves it away quickly, making a face.  He then leaves the room.  Diego watches him go with a smile.]

Diego [as he stands up and motions to Felipe]
We must use this time to shrink that enormous pride of our alcalde, Felipe. [He goes over and takes a mirror down off the wall to the left of Escanto's bed.] Saddle Toronado.

[Felipe nods then walks off to his left.  Diego follows, carrying the mirror.  Escanto still sleeps.]

[Exterior night shot of the pueblo as a wolf howls.]

[Exterior night shot of the cuartel as Zorro climbs about on the roof.  He jumps down to the ground then turns around.  He turns to a window and pushes it open.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's bedroom as a pair of black gloves sit on a padded leather bench.  Snoring is heard off camera.  A pair of black boots stand on a carpet.  De Soto's bare feet hang out from under his blankets.]

[Exterior night shot of de Soto's bedroom as Zorro uses his whip to snatch the gloves, then the boots.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza walks in, carrying a basket covered with a white cloth.  He sets the basket down on de Soto's desk and removes the cloth.]

Mendoza [sniffing the air]
Hmm. . .

[He takes out a red-checkered napkin from the basket.]

[Exterior night shot of de Soto's bedroom as Zorro turns away from the window as a door behind him opens.  Victoria comes through the door, carrying a tray.]

Victoria
Zorro?

Zorro [smiling]
This is a pleasant surprise.

Victoria [as she steps toward him]
Did you come to rescue Shone?

Zorro
No, Victoria.  The Alcalde would only throw him back in jail.  We must find a way to alter de Soto's opinion of our Indian friends permanently.

Victoria
To alter the Alcalde's opinion. . .  Now that's a lot to ask.

Zorro
It is indeed.  Why don't we start by altering this? [He holds up the gloves and boots.] Come on.

[He starts off to his right and puts his left hand on Victoria's right cheek as she looks confused.]

[Closeup shot of a book being written in.  The camera pans upward to show Escanto who now has a red rash on his nose and cheeks.  He tears out the paper he was writing on and hands it to Sepulveda who stands by the side of the bed.]

Escanto
Take that to the Alcalde at once.

Sepulveda [taking the paper]
Si.

[He turns and walks out of the room.  Diego comes in, carrying the glass of red liquid on a tray.]

Escanto [leaning back onto his pillows]
There.  I feel better already.  Enacting one new law against these Indians [Diego sets the tray down on a bedside table then reaches behind Escanto.] does more to speed my recovery than one thousand cups of your potion.

Diego [plump up Escanto's pillows]
A new law, Excellency?  I thought we agreed we wouldn't work ourselves too hard during our recovery.

[He picks up the tray then stirs the red liquid with a spoon.]

Escanto
Well, we decided otherwise.  By tomorrow, this pueblo will be Indian-free.

Diego [still stirring the liquid]
I see.  Well, I think it's time you took your medicine.

[He takes out the spoon and sets it on the tray then holds it out toward Escanto.]

Escanto [picking up the glass]
But it doesn't seem to be doing me any good.

Diego
Nonsense, Excellency.  It will make a new man out of you.

[Escanto drinks the liquid with a grimace then sets the glass back down on the tray.  He then looks over to his left.]

Escanto
Oh, by the way, wasn't there a mirror on that wall?

Diego
Yes.  Um, it broke.

Escanto [as he starts to get sleepy]
Seven years bad luck for someone.

[His head lolls to his left as he falls asleep.]

[Interior night shot of Escanto's bedroom as he tosses and turns, muttering incoherently as he sleeps.  His entire face is bright red and his hair is now black.]

Escanto [muttering in his sleep]
Get off!  Get away!  I don't want to feel your agony!  No! [He struggles as the room grows brighter.] Go away!  Leave me in peace!  No!

[Diego creeps up beside Escanto's bed, carrying a candelabra.  Don Alejandro follows behind him.  Escanto opens his eyes.]

Don Alejandro
Excellency, we heard noises. . .   Oh!

[He and Diego pretend to recoil in horror.]

Escanto [worried]
What is it?

Diego [as he leans in closer with the candelabra]
Look at that.

Don Alejandro
It's not possible.

Escanto [looking frightened]
Wh-What is not possible?

[Don Alejandro holds out a hand mirror to Escanto which Escanto brings up to his face.]

Escanto [as he touches his hand to his red face]
Madre de Dios.  I've become one of them while I slept. [He looks up at Diego and Don Alejandro.] I. . .I am an Indian.

Diego [mockingly]
I wonder what tribe?

[He turns and looks at Don Alejandro as Escanto continues to stare at himself in the mirror then starts whimpering.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior night shot of Escanto's bedroom as Escanto looks up at Diego and Don Alejandro while still holding the mirror.]

Diego
There has to be a logical explanation.

Escanto
If there is, I want to hear about it.

Don Alejandro
Well, perhaps in your ancestry, there's some Indian blood?

Escanto [incredulously]
What?  Never!

Diego
Good heavens!  I just remembered what that Indian said to his Excellency in the plaza.  ‘Someday you will know the agony you bring to my people.'

Don Alejandro [pointing at Diego]
Oh, no.  You don't suppose that. . .

Diego [tilting his head]
Hmm. . .

Escanto
That is it.  It's that Indian.  He has done this to me.

Diego
But how?

Escanto
How do I know?  He's an Indian, isn't he?  He's got spells. . .and charms.  I must see him at once.

[He tries to get out of bed but Diego puts his left hand on Escanto's right shoulder.]

Diego
That's a very good idea.  But be very careful.  Remember the new law you just passed.

Don Alejandro
Any Indian found in the pueblo will be flogged.  I wouldn't wear any bright colors.  They might make you an easy target.

Escanto [as he falls back against the pillows]
Ah. . .

[He puts the bed covers over his head.

Diego [with mock sincerity]
Trapped by his own edict.

[Diego and Don Alejandro look at each other then Diego reaches under the bed covers and pulls out Escanto's hand then place the mirror into it.  Diego and Don Alejandro then walk out of the room.  Escanto lowers the bed covers then tosses the mirror aside.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Diego walks down the steps.  Felipe is at the laboratory table, grinding something in a bowl with a pestle.]

Diego [as he walks up to Felipe]
More potion for his Excellency, Felipe.  The symptoms are only temporary, so we must keep making him drink his concoction. [Felipe nods and keeps crushing.] We'll need more ash and tar to blacken his hair while he sleeps and. . . [He leans over and sniffs a red liquid bubbling in a beaker over a flame.] You know, I think we should add twice the amount of chili peppers this time.

[Felipe reaches over and adds a handful of peppers to his bowl, then takes one more.  Diego picks up the last one and puts it in the bowl too.]

Diego
Why not?

[Closeup night shot of a window as Zorro jumps down beside it.]

Diego [voiceover]
In the meantime, Zorro is going to visit the Alcalde's office.]

[Zorro opens the window then climbs through it.]

[Exterior day shot of de Soto's office as a lancer stands outside of it as a rooster crows.]

[Closeup interior shot of black boot being pulled on.]

Mendoza [off camera at first]
Alcalde, I don't understand. . .

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza helps de Soto put on his jacket.]

Mendoza
That Indian, he just sits in that cell.  He just stares all the time.  He doesn't say anything.  He makes me nervous.

de Soto [chuckling]
Oh, Sergeant, chickens make you nervous. [He turns then stops suddenly, looking at Mendoza oddly before moving past him.] Well, I'm off to pay a visit to Emissary Escanto.

[He goes over to his desk and sits down.  Mendoza comes up and stands to de Soto's right.]

Mendoza
Is he in much pain, sir?

de Soto [opening a desk drawer]
Apparently so.  Corporal Sepulveda says he looks quite ill.

[He shuts the drawer then holds up a book.]

Mendoza
The Indian said that would happen.

de Soto
Oh, nonsense, Sergeant.  Emissary Escanto fell off his horse, plain and simple.  Besides, what did he say about me?  That I would shrivel up with hate? [He curls up his arms as he chuckles and stands up.] Look at me.  I'm perfectly normal.

[He stops and turns back to look at his chair then sits back down in it.  The desktop is about level with his throat.  He touches the desktop then jerks his hands away quickly then stands back up.  Mendoza holds out a pair of black gloves and de Soto grabs them.  He puts them on but they are much too big.  He looks over his shoulder at Mendoza and has to look up to meet his eyes.  De Soto then walks off to his right.  Mendoza follows.]

[Interior shot of the de la Vega hacienda foyer as Diego helps de Soto take his coat off.]

Diego
So good of you to come by, Ignacio.  His Excellency will be delighted.

[De Soto stares up at Diego, who seems to be much taller.]

Diego [indicating to his right with his right hand]
Right this way.

[De Soto and Diego walk off to their right.  Diego carries de Soto's coat which he tosses backward.  Felipe steps up and catches it in his right hand as he holds an exact replica in his left hand.  He sets the replica down on the piano before turning and carrying de Soto's coat into the library.]

[Interior shot of Escanto's bedroom as Escanto looks at himself in the hand mirror.  He jumps and pulls the bed covers over his head as de Soto and Diego step into the room.]

Diego
Look's who here, Emissary.

de Soto [slowly approaching the bed]
Buenos dias, Don Jose.

Escanto [his voice muffled by the bed covers]
Go away!

Diego [to de Soto]
He's been like this for a day or two.  Um. . .so shy. [A bell rings off camera.] Ah, it's time for his medicine.  Perhaps you could talk to him.  Cheer him up.  You know, one Madrileño to another.

[He pats de Soto on the shoulder then leaves the room.  De Soto looks down at Escanto and scratches his head.]

de Soto [bending down and talking loudly]
Well, how are we feeling today, your Excellency?

Escanto [angrily]
I injured my leg, not my hearing.

de Soto [straightening up]
Uh, yes, yes, of course, your Excellency.  Please forgive me.  Your law is working like a charm.  Not one single Indian has dared to show his red face inside the pueblo. [Escanto burrows deeper under the bed covers as de Soto chuckles.] Yes, I knew that you would be pleased.

[Diego comes back into the room, carrying the glass of red liquid on a tray.]

Diego
Time for you medicine, Emissary.

Escanto [as Diego sets the tray on the bedside table]
Put it down and go away!

Diego [turning to de Soto]
We'd better humor him.

de Soto [nodding]
Um-hmm.

[He and Diego leave the room.  Diego stops at the doorway and looks at Escanto who is still under the bed covers before reaching back and closing the door.  Escanto then lowers the bed covers and resumes looking at himself in the mirror.]

[Interior shot of the de la Vega foyer where Felipe stands, holding de Soto's coat as de Soto and Diego come into the room.]

Diego
I'm sure your visit did him a world of good.

[He takes de Soto's coat from Felipe.]

de Soto
Well, he seems much worse.

[Diego help de Soto put on his coat.  The left sleeve is too long.  De Soto stares at the coat worriedly.]

Diego
Is something wrong?

[De Soto turns and stares up at Diego again]

de Soto [as Diego helps him with the coat]
No, no.  You seem to be much taller, that's all.

Diego [assessing de Soto in the oversized coat]
Now that you mention it, you seem to be much shorter.  I'd have a word with your tailor if I were you.  Now, if you'll forgive me, I must get back to my patient.

[He puts his hand on de Soto's back and escorts him to the front door.  Diego reaches out and open the door.]

Diego [looking assessing at de Soto again]
It really looks as if you might be shriveling.

[De Soto clasps his hands together in horror then goes out the door.  Diego closes it behind him before turning and smiling at Felipe.  He walks over and sits down on the piano bench.]

Diego [as he reaches down]
You know, I'm really enjoying bringing the Alcalde down a size.

[He pulls a piece of wood from his boot and tosses it to Felipe, who catches it.]

Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
Diego! [ He enters the foyer.] Escanto's not in his room.

[Diego looks concerned.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Escanto limps across the plaza before hiding behind a post.  He lowers his head as two men walk past him.  He limps his way over to a door which he tries to open.  He jumps back and ducks behind a barrel as Mendoza opens the door from the other side.  Mendoza goes to lock the door as Escanto comes up behind him then hits him on the head with a wooden bucket.]

Mendoza
Ooh!

[Escanto catches Mendoza as he falls then drags him inside the door.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as Shone stands in his cell, grasping the bars in his hands.  Escanto drags the unconscious Mendoza into the adjoining cell, then takes Mendoza's keys.  Escanto goes over to Shone's cell door and fumbles with the keys.  Shone stares as Escanto unlocks his cell door.]

Shone [staring at Escanto incredulously]
Who are you?

Escanto
I'll explain later.  Once I've helped you to escape, you must lift this spell you put on me.

Shone [incredulously]
Spell?  What spell?  What are you talking about?

Escanto [as he grabs Shone and pulls him out of the cell]
Come on.

[Shone and Escanto walk over to the door leading outside.  Shone stops and looks out before they both go through it.  Mendoza starts to wake up then gets to his feet.  He runs out of the cell and looks around the empty jail.]

Mendoza
Alcalde!  Alcalde!

[A door opens off camera then de Soto appears in the jail, still wearing the oversized coat.  He runs over to Shone's empty cell then turns to Mendoza.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Shone and Escanto duck and dodge their way around buildings.  They go under a hitching rail then around the corner of a building then stop with their backs up against the wall.]

Shone [looking over at Escanto]
You are the reddest Indian I've ever seen.  What tribe are you?

Escanto
I am not from any tribe.  Now, quickly, we must get out of this pueblo before they. . .

Shone [bringing his fingers up to his lips]
Shh. . .

[He looks around then waves his hand forward.  They start walking across a courtyard past a door which suddenly opens.  De Soto and Mendoza come through it.]

de Soto
There they are, Sergeant!

[He pushes Mendoza in front of him.  Mendoza falls to his knees as Shone and Escanto run off to their left.  They reach the hitching rail where they meet two lancers.  Escanto jumps out of the way as one lancers charges at him.  The lancer runs past him and falls on his face.  The other lancers tries to grab Shone but fall over the hitching rail instead.  Escanto and Shone run off but Escanto's leg gives out and he falls down to one knee.  Shone turns back and helps Escanto back up.]

Shone
I will not leave my brother.

[He helps Escanto walk.]

de Soto [off camera]
Stop those red savages!

[Mendoza and de Soto run after Escanto and Shone who meet up with more lancers in front of de Soto's office.  The lancers aim their muskets at Escanto and Shone.]

de Soto
Ah!  Prepare them for flogging!  Take them into the cuartel!

[Lancers grab Shone and Escanto and start dragging them away.]

de Soto
Sergeant, get my whip!

[Mendoza goes toward de Soto's office as the lancers continue to drag Escanto and Shone toward the cuartel gate.  De Soto and several more lancers follow them as townspeople start to gather.]

de Soto [as he runs inside the cuartel]
Guard the gate!

[Lancers use their muskets to hold the townspeople back.]

[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard as two lancers shove Escanto and Shone up against two posts and start tying them up.  De Soto looks on.]

Shone [to Escanto]
Courage, my friend.  If we are to be punished for what we are, let us show them no fear.

de Soto [looking at Escanto]
This one's wearing a white man's clothes.  He'll pay dearly for that.

Escanto [angrily]
I am not an Indian!

[De Soto chuckles as Mendoza hands him his whip.  De Soto brings his arm back, intending to flog Escanto but a dagger suddenly pins the whip to the ground.  De Soto yanks on it then looks back then up to where Zorro is standing on the cuartel roof.]

de Soto
Zorro!

[Zorro runs down to the edge of the roof then jumps down into the yard.]

Voices [off camera]
Zorro!  Zorro!  Yay!

[Zorro punches two lancers who come at him.  He goes over to the cuartel gate and kicks another lancer in the stomach before closing the gates then barring them.]

Zorro [turning back to face de Soto]
You know, Alcalde, sometimes you really try my patience.

de Soto
Well, see how patient you are when you're flogged alongside these red savages.

[De Soto draws out his sword.  Zorro quickly unsheathes his saber.]

Zorro [in a shocked tone]
Alcalde, everything about you seems. . .smaller. [De Soto looks down at himself.] Could it be that you have contracted the dreaded Napoleon shrinking disease?

[De Soto thrusts out his sword and Zorro knocks it up into the air after only a few moves.  Zorro slices a ‘Z' into de Soto's clothes before catching the sword with his left hand.  He then uses that hand to backhand de Soto across the face.  De Soto falls backward to the ground.  Mendoza thrusts his sword at Zorro then pulls up.  He looks up apologetically at Zorro then drops his sword.]

Mendoza
I dropped my sword, Zorro.

Zorro
Good timing, Sergeant.  Hold this.

[He tosses de Soto's sword to Mendoza, who catches it awkwardly.]

Escanto [as he steps up to Zorro]
In spite of appearances, Señor, you have just rescued an important Spanish emissary and you will not go unrewarded.

Zorro [a bit angrily]
No, Señor, I have rescued two men.  Indian or Spanish, it matters not to me.  And as for my reward, all I ask is that in future, you treat all men with the dignity they deserve.

[He sheathes his saber then turns away.  Escanto watches as Zorro climbs up the side of the cuartel then disappears up on the roof.]

Escanto [turning to Shone and putting his hand on his shoulder]
You have taught me that there is honor and decency amongst all peoples.  How can I thank you?

Shone
Judge a man by his deeds and what is in his heart.

[He places his fist on his chest.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as people mill about.]

Escanto [off camera at first]
When I return to Madrid, I will speak to the King himself about the plight of the Indians in his colonies.

[Exterior shot of the tavern where Escanto stands facing Victoria, Don Alejandro, Felipe, and Diego.]

Victoria
Well, it seems tome that the only Indian problem the Spanish government has right now is how to take more of their land away from them.

Escanto
I couldn't agree more, Señorita. [He goes over to Diego and shakes his hand.] Thank you, Diego for your remarkable cure.

Diego
It was nothing.

Escanto
Oh, no, it was quite something.  I became my old self again overnight.  But only on the outside.

[He turns and walks over to his horse as Victoria, don Alejandro, and Diego look at each other.]

Escanto [now on horseback]
I still can't believe that Zorro actually came to my rescue.  According to Alcalde de Soto, he's a notorious felon.

Don Alejandro
According to Alcalde de Soto, the world is a strange place, Excellency. Adios.

Escanto
Adios.

[He turns and rides his horse out of the pueblo.  Don Alejandro puts his hand on Victoria's back as they all turn to go inside the tavern.  Laughter is heard off camera.  They turn to see de Soto, in oversized clothing with his sword dragging on the ground, walking toward them, followed by Mendoza.]

de Soto
Diego!

Diego [as he and Felipe stop]
Yes?

de Soto [stopping in front of Diego]
You're a man of medicine, hmm?

Diego
Well, I know a little something.

de Soto
Oh, no, no, no, no.  Don't be modest.  Tell me. . .have you ever heard of Napoleon's shrinking disease?

Diego
Yes I have.  Um. . .it originated in France, if I'm not mistaken.

de Soto [disgustedly]
As so many distasteful things do.  Uh, tell me, is there. . .a cure?

Diego
Yes, I believe there is, Ignacio.

de Soto
Oh, thank goodness.  What is it?  The cure?

Diego [looking puzzled]
I don't actually recall. [He smiles innocently.] But if you come to the hacienda tomorrow, I might be able to think of something.

de Soto [looking dismayed]
Ah.  Tomorrow.

[He nods and turns around then he and Mendoza walk away.  De Soto's sword drags on the ground.  Diego and Felipe look at each other then start laughing.  Diego shakes his head.]
