RUSTIN THEORIES
I believe that James Murry Rustin was the son of William Rustin who
was the son of Jesse Rustin. I do not have any proof of this connection
however. There is a shortage of information surrounding these families,
except what is scattered throughout census and other records. I think that
the lack of reading and writing skills of these individuals is what is
causing this brick wall and stopping us from connecting these ancestors
together as a family unit. Nothing could be written into a family Bible
if no one in the family could not read or even write it. Below are a few
facts that I have gathered on the Rustin family.
Fact #1. Jesse Rustin purchased land in Washington Co Tennessee 25 Aug 1797. He bought 43 ½ acres for $40 from a James Dunn.
Fact #2. Mary Rustin born 1804 in Tennessee lists Jesse Rustin as her father at the time of her marriage (1822). Mary married James Shadrach Murray in Campbell Co Tennessee. She is the only one of his children to stay in Tennessee.
Fact #3. Urith Rustin Murray swore in an affidavit she was the sister of Martha Rustin Jones on 6 Mar 1873. Martha was applying for a pension based on her husband Mark Jones' service during the War of 1812. Martha & Mark were married 23 Jul 1812 at her father's house in Claiborn Co Tennessee. Mark Jones migrated from Tennessee to Cole Co Missouri then to Barry & Stone Co. He is listed in the 1840 census in Barry Co Missouri. He died in 1846. Martha was listed as being 75 years old in Jul of 1872 placing her year of birth as 1797. She was living in Henry Co Missouri at the time of her petition.

There is a William Rustin in the 1830 US Census for Campbell Co Tennessee (the only Rustin listed in the county). In his household is one male age 20-30 one female age 20-30 and 2 males age 0-5. They were gone from Campbell Co by 1840. I think this is the William Rustin age 41 in the 1850 Cole Co Census living as a laborer with the Rineburger family. I also believe that the 2 males(his sons) are Jessie Rustin age 21 living with Jessie & Rhody Wise Williams in the 1850 Moniteau Co Census and James Rustin age 20 living with Joseph Williams. If the above family for Jesse Rustin is correct, Jessie Rustin & Rhody Wise would be 1st cousins as Rhody was the daughter of Rhoda Rustin and Nathaniel Wise. I don't know if there is a connection between Joseph Williams & Jessie Williams but it seems likely. The six Rustins who are scattered throughout the 1850 Census I speculate are children of William Rustin. The youngest Eliza was born about 1839. Something must have happened to the mother of these children between her birth and 1850 causing the children to be farmed out among various relations, Lucinda with her aunt Eurith Murray, Eliza with her sister Elizabeth Prine and the boys working as laborers.

I must emphasize that these families I have put together are just theories, there is no hard evidence to back them up. Just a lot of little coincidences that make these scenarios extremely possible.
