First US Airdate 30 March 1990   Episode 1.17

[Exterior shot of the pueblo gate as people on foot and on horseback pass under it.]

[Exterior shot of the plaza as a soldier rides into it.  He comes to a halt in front of Ramone's office and dismounts.  He walks past Mendoza who is sitting tipped back in a chair with his feet on the porch railing and yawning.  The soldier knock on the office door.]

Ramone [off camera]
Enter!

[The soldier opens the door and goes inside the office.  Mendoza falls asleep.]

[Interior shot of Ramone's office where Ramone is seated behind his desk as the soldier hands him a scroll tied with a red ribbon.  The soldier salutes and Ramone salutes him back using the scroll.  He slides off the ribbon then unrolls the scroll and reads it.  He stands up and walks to the front of his desk, chuckling.]

Ramone
Mendoza.

[He chuckles then frowns then walks forward.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office where Mendoza sits with his chair tipped back.  He is now snoring.  Ramone pokes his head out of the doorway and looks to his left at Mendoza.]

Ramone
Mendoza!

[Mendoza wakes up and the chair falls forward.  Mendoza hits his head on a post then gets to his feet and unsteadily walks inside the office.]

[Interior shot of Ramone's office where Ramone stands with his back to the door, holding the scroll to his lips.  Mendoza comes inside the office and shuts the door behind him.]

Mendoza
If it's about the missing strawberries, Alcalde, I have no idea. . .

Ramone [turning around to face Mendoza]
Oh, forget about the strawberries.  Here's the answer to our prayers.

Mendoza
You have been recalled to Mexico City?

Ramone
No, but it's good news nevertheless.  The commandant at Santa Barbara has informed me that Leonardo Montez has just escaped.

Mendoza [shrugging]
That may be good news for Leonardo, but I don't see what that has to do with. . .

Ramone
Use your head, man.  Now why did they lock up Montez and throw away the key?

Mendoza
Ah, because he did a terrible thing.  He stole the blessed jewel of Guadalupe.

[He makes the sign of the cross.]

Ramone [with his back to Mendoza again]
And what else?

Mendoza
He refused to say where he had hidden the sacred jewel.

Ramone [turning around to face Mendoza again]
Precisely!  Now this letter informs me he was last seen heading south, to Los Angeles!

[He grins at Mendoza who squirms uncomfortably.]

Mendoza
Really?

Ramone [rolling his eyes upward]
Why am I surrounded by such incompetence? [He stares at Mendoza.] Who captured him?

Mendoza
You did, mi Alcalde.

Ramone
Where?

Mendoza
Right here in Los Angeles.

Ramone
When?

Mendoza
Four weeks after the theft.

Ramone
So, think, Sergeant!

Mendoza [hesitantly]
So, you think, uh, maybe, uh, he placed the jewel somewhere, uh, here in our pueblo?

Ramone
Exactly!  I never got a chance to question him personally.  That interfering commandant from Santa Barbara arrived.  But I'm sure the stone is here somewhere.

Mendoza
So, we wait for Montez to arrive, follow him to the secret hideout, and retrieve the jewel, and return it to the holy altar at the mission.

Ramone
Hmm.  Yes, well. . . [He taps Mendoza with the scroll.] I want you to deploy the men immediately. [He goes over and puts his right hand on a map hanging on the wall behind his desk.] I want Montez arrested as soon as he shows his face in Los Angeles.

Mendoza [saluting]
Si, mi Alcalde.

Ramone [turning from the map to face Mendoza]
Oh, and Mendoza.  I want him alive.

[Mendoza bows, clicking his heels together.  He then turns, opens the door and exits, shutting the door behind him.  Ramone turns back to the map and caresses it with his right hand.]

Ramone [with an evil grin]
This time I'll find it.

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the plaza as soldiers stops and search people carrying baskets.  Mendoza stops a couple driving a wagon and searches it.  He waves them on when he is done.  The rear wheel of the wagon runs over Mendoza's left foot.]

Mendoza [grabbing his left shin and hopping on his right leg]
Ah, manditas!

[People laugh as Mendoza hops and limps his way into the tavern.]

[Interior shot of the tavern as Mendoza limps inside and sits down at a table.  He pulls off his left boot then puts his left foot on the table.  His toes protrude from a large hole in his sock.  Victoria comes up to him as he moans as he rubs his injured foot.]

Victoria
Buenos dias, Sergeant.

Mendoza
Buenos dias, Señorita.

Victoria
You look like you could use a drink.

Mendoza
Well, catching criminals can be a tiring job at the best of times.

Victoria [looking to her left]
I wondered why the garrison was tramping all over town.  He must be a very nasty person to cause such a commotion.

Mendoza
Oh, that he is, Señorita Escalante.  This is the man who stole the blessed jewel of Guadalupe.

Victoria
Well, tell me what he look like, in case he ever show his face in here.

Mendoza
He is of medium height, handsome in an outlaw kind of way. [He runs his right index finger down his left cheek.] Has a scar on his left face.

[A man with a scar on his left cheek turns away from the bar, looks at Mendoza, then walks behind Victoria, covering his face with his hand.]

Mendoza [nodding to the man]
Buenos dias, Señor. [to Victoria] If you see anyone resembling this man, let me know.

Victoria
You mean like the man who just left?

[She turns to her left.  Mendoza follows her gaze.]

Mendoza
Montez! [He grabs his boot from the bench beside him.] Madre de Dios! [He starts to leave but turns back and grabs his hat off the table.] Thief!

[He hurries out of the tavern as Victoria watches as she tries to hide a smile.]

Mendoza [off camera]
Thief!  Stop!

[Closeup shot of a painting that look suspiciously like Victoria as Diego stands to its left.]

Diego
There.  Finished.  I think I'll call it ‘Mona Lisa of the Pueblo'.  What do you think?

[Interior shot of the de la Vega hacienda as Diego and Felipe stand and look at the painting which is on an easel facing away from the camera.  Felipe points to the painting then brings his hands up by his ears then rolls them downward and smiles.]

Diego
You think it looks like Señorita Victoria. [He acts innocently.]  Really?  I hadn't noticed.

[A door opens off camera.]

Victoria [off camera]
Señor de la Vega?

[Diego hurriedly covers the painting with a red cloth then steps in front of the easel as Victoria walks up to them.]

Diego
Señorita Escalante, what a pleasant surprise.

Victoria
Is your father at home, Don Diego?

Diego [becoming concerned]
What's the matter?

Victoria
The alcalde has just captured the thief who stole the jewel of Guadalupe.

Diego
Well, how's that possible?  He's imprisoned in Santa Barbara.

Victoria
He escaped.

Diego
He must have hidden the jewel somewhere near Los Angeles.  There would be no other reason to return to the scene of his capture.

Victoria
Well, if the alcalde has Montez, it won't be long before he finds the sacred stone and you can be sure he will try to keep it for himself.

Diego [angrily]
We can't allow him to do that.  That stone belongs to the church. [He points at Victoria.] We have to stop the alcalde.

Victoria [surprised by his reaction]
Do I hear correctly?  Is Don Diego becoming a man of action?

Diego [passionately]
Absolutely.  I think we should. . . [He realizes his mistake and switches to a calmer tone of voice.] Pray.

[Felipe smiles knowingly.]

Victoria [a bit disappointed]
Well, someone must remind the alcalde of his obligation regarding the sacred stone.

Diego
Excellent thought.

[Victoria rolls her eyes at him then turns and leaves.  Felipe smiles.]

Diego [looking over at Felipe]
I think we should pay the alcalde a visit before he gets his hands on that sacred stone.

[Felipe makes a ‘Z' in the air with his right index finger.]

Diego [motioning with his right hand]
Come on.

[He and Felipe walk into the library.]

[Interior shot of Ramone's office as two lancers drag Leonardo by his arms to a chair where Ramone stands on one side and Mendoza on the other.  The two lancers take several steps backward.]

Leonardo
I swear, Alcalde, I never took the stone.  Why do you think I tried to escape?  I have spent two years in jail for a crime I never committed.

Ramone [sarcastically as he looks upward]
Most touching.

Leonardo
I have done things I am not proud of.  But I would never dream of stealing a sacred blessed jewel.  You must believe me.

[He tries to stand up but Ramone puts his right on Leonardo's right shoulder and pushes him back down into the chair.  Ramone leans forward and holds up a curved dagger in a scabbard.]

Ramone
Tell me, Leonardo, do you appreciate beauty?  Works of art?

Leonardo
Yes, of course.

Ramone [bringing up the sheathed dagger and holding it in front of Leonardo's face]
Then take a look at this.

[He unsheathes the dagger.]

Leonardo [nervously]
It's very nice.

Ramone [chuckling]
It is five hundred years old.  Crafted by the Turks with exquisite care.  It was owned by one of their emperors, Asullah the Malevolent.  I've never owned a dagger with so sharp a blade. [He goes over and plucks a hair from Mendoza's head then slices the hair with the dagger.] A man could shave with it and not leave the smallest whisker.

[He leans down closer to Leonardo as does Mendoza.]

Mendoza
Please, Leonardo, do what is right.  Save yourself.  Confess.

Leonardo
But, Sergeant, I do not know.

Ramone
My patience is wearing thin.

[He snaps his fingers and the two lancers come over and pull Leonardo from the chair then push him up against a wall.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office roof as Zorro walks across it, then crouches down and opens the skylight.]

Leonardo [off camera]
Please, Alcalde.  I am not a thief!

[Interior shot of Ramone's office as the two lancers still have Leonardo pinned to the wall.]

Leonardo
Don't you think I've suffered enough?

Ramone [smiling evilly]
My friend, you have not even begun to suffer.

Leonardo
I tell you, I am an innocent man!

Zorro [off camera]
Alcalde!

[Ramone looks up as Zorro descends through the rafters as he climbs down his whip.]

Ramone
Zorro!

[Zorro lands on the floor and yanks down the whip.  Ramone and Mendoza both take a step backward.]

Zorro
Your methods of interrogation have all the subtlety of a battering ram.

Ramone
The man's a criminal.

Zorro [as he coils up his whip]
Then why not show him some professional courtesy and let him go.

Ramone
He knows the location of the jewel of Guadalupe.

Leonardo
I know nothing, I swear!

Zorro
Alcalde, as an intelligent man, I'm disappointed in you.  It is common knowledge that after the theft of the sacred stone, the thieves buried it somewhere near the south fork of Camino Real.

Ramone
You can't expect me to believe such foolishness!

Zorro
Of course not.  I know what little regard you have for the truth.

Ramone [angrily]
Seize him!

[The two lancers push Leonardo forward toward the floor and go over to Zorro, drawing their swords.  Zorro cracks his whip again and again at the lancers and they put up their arms to protect themselves.  Zorro continues to crack the whip until they fall to the floor.  Ramone throws his dagger at Zorro who moves to his right.  The dagger sticks into the wall.  Zorro turns and pulls it out of the wall.]

Zorro
Ah. [He spins the dagger up in the air then catches it as Ramone hides behind a chair.] Bad copy of Asullah the Malevolent's dagger.

Ramone [rising up from behind the chair indignantly]
What do you mean, a bad copy?  I paid two hundred pesos for that.

Zorro
How ironic.  That such a cheap imitation should fall into the hands of the greatest swindler of all.

[He throws the dagger toward Ramone who holds up his left arm to protect himself.  The dagger pins his shirt sleeve to the wall.  The two lancers remain in a heap on the floor.]

Ramone [off camera]
After him!

[Zorro starts cracking his whip again then whistles.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office as Toronado runs up to its front door.]

[Interior shot of Ramone's office as an astonished Leonardo watches as Zorro holds off the lancers with his whip.]

Zorro [to Leonardo]
Señor I think we've worn out our welcome.

Leonardo [incredulously]
You want me to go with you?

Zorro [as he continues to lash out with his whip]
The choice is simple.  Me or the dagger.

Leonardo
Lead the way.

Ramone [to Mendoza as he is still pinned to the wall by the dagger]
Get him.

[Mendoza goes toward Zorro who uses the whip to make a ‘Z' on the front of Mendoza's uniform.  Mendoza jumps backward.]

Zorro [with a wave]
Adios.

[He turns and leads Leonardo out of the office as Mendoza looks on incredulously.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office as Zorro and Leonardo exit through the front door.]

Ramone [off camera]
After him!

[Zorro and Leonardo run to their left.  A lancer with a musket comes out of the office but jumps back as Toronado with Zorro and Leonardo on his back gallops right past the office door.  Two lancers run after them followed by Ramone and Mendoza.   They all watch as Zorro and Leonardo ride out of the pueblo.  Ramone turns around and puts his hand on the porch rail then glares at Mendoza.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of a stone barn as Zorro and Leonardo ride toward it.]

[Interior shot of the stone barn where Felipe is inside putting hay into a wheelbarrow.  A horse's whinny can be hear off camera.  Felipe pushes the wheelbarrow aside and hides behind a post.  A blindfolded Leonardo enters the barn followed by Zorro and Toronado.  Zorro goes over to Felipe.]

Zorro
You should get back to the hacienda.  If Leonardo see you here, the true identity of Zorro could be in jeopardy.  Go.

[Felipe nods then runs off to his left.  Zorro turns around walk over to the still blindfolded Leonardo.]

Zorro
I apologize for the blindfold, Señor. [He starts to untie the blindfold.] I must keep the location of this barn a secret. [He removes the blindfold from Leonardo's eyes.] It is on the land of someone very close to me.

Leonardo
I understand.  You are obviously not one of the alcalde's favorite people.

Zorro [patting Leonardo on the shoulder]
You'll be safe here.  I'll be back soon.

[He leaves, walking past Toronado, who snorts.]

Leonardo [after Zorro is gone]
I think it is time to go.

[He turns to his right and takes a step but Toronado rears up, whinnying loudly.  Leonardo takes a step back.]

Leonardo [as Toronado continues to rear and whinny]
I think perhaps I am going to stay.

[Exterior shot of the tavern where a horse is tied to the hitching rail.]

Mendoza [off camera at first]
And the braggart said. . .

[Interior shot of the tavern where Mendoza stands with his foot on a bench, talking to four lancers sitting at a table.]

Mendoza [with his hat under his arm]
Sorry, I have no pesos.

[The lancers at the table all laugh loudly as does Mendoza.]

Ramone [off camera]
Mendoza!

[Mendoza turns then runs over to Ramone who is entering the tavern.]

Mendoza
Si, mi Alcalde.

Ramone
Get the men mounted at once.

Mendoza
Why?  Are we going to the south fork?

Ramone
North fork.

Mendoza
But Zorro said the south fork.

Ramone
Mendoza, don't you realize by now Zorro is a lying brigand.  If he said south, he meant north.  By sunset I shall have the jewel of Guadalupe.

Victoria [walking up behind Ramone]
And then I'm sure you will return it to the mission in Santa Barbara.

Ramone
Señorita, are you implying anything different?

Victoria
No.  But they are some men who would simply sell it to the highest bidder.

Mendoza
Ah, surely you don't think our alcalde was one of them?

Ramone
No, Sergeant.  Certainly not.

Victoria
I do hope that is true.

[She walks past Ramone and Mendoza, staring at them pointedly.  Mendoza looks over at Ramone then shrugs and smiles.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave where Felipe is sitting on a stool and spinning on it back and forth while the stool squeaks loudly.  Diego stands at the lab table, grinding something in a white bowl he is holding in his left hand.]

Diego [as Felipe continues to spin on the stool]
The jewel of Guadalupe is beautiful.  It's going to be difficult to recreate its magnificence. [He rolls his eyes as Felipe continues to spin noisily on the stool.] Felipe.

[Felipe stops spinning and looks over at Diego.]

Diego
Why don't you run over to the barn and see how our guest is doing?  Toronado may be getting bored with guard duty.

[Felipe gets up and goes off to his right as Diego smiles then continues to grind something in the white bowl.]

[Interior shot of the stone barn where Leonardo is talking to Toronado.]

Leonardo
Ah, listen, horse.  The hours is growing late.  I must go.

[Toronado snorts softly.]

Leonardo
I tell you what, I'll bring you back a treat.  What's your fancy?  Some fresh oats?  Some fresh hay?  A lump of sugar?

[Toronado snorts a little louder.]

Leonardo [looking dismayed]
Wonderful.  What do I have to do to get out of here?  This is incredible.  I am trapped here by a horse.

[Toronado snorts.]

Leonardo
I give up. [He sits down on a bale of hay.] I never ask for much.  A nice home.  Good food.  Clothes I could be proud of.  It's not my fault I have no skills.  So I committed a few thefts. [The camera pulls back to reveal Felipe listening to Leonard from behind a post.] I would have retired after taking the jewel of Guadalupe, honestly.

[Toronado whinnies.]

Leonardo
That would have brought me enough money for the rest of my life.

[Toronado snorts loudly.  Leonardo looks up at him.   Felipe turns around and leaves the barn.]

[Exterior shot of a muddy field where Mendoza sits on the ground, a shovel stuck in the ground in front of him.  Two lancers are behind him, digging in a chest-deep hole.  Mendoza snores loudly.  Hoof beats are heard approaching off camera.]

[Exterior shot of the road where Ramone and another lancers are traveling on horseback.]

[Exterior shot of the field where Mendoza wakes up suddenly.  He gets to his feet, grabs his shovel and starts digging furiously.  The lancers behind Mendoza throw shovelfuls of dirt at his back.  Mendoza turns and gives them a dirty look.]

Ramone [after coming to a halt near the hole and dismounting his horse]
Keep digging!

Mendoza [as Ramone walk past him and looks into the hole]
Alcalde. . . [He pauses to catch his breath.] We've been digging for hours.  Maybe Zorro was right.

Ramone [pointing downward]
The jewel is here. [He looks over at the hole again.] Find it.

[Exterior shot of Zorro and Toronado riding across a field with a blindfolded Leonard riding behind Zorro.  Zorro brings Toronado to a halt.  Felipe peeks up from behind a large boulder then ducks back down.  Leonardo gets down from Toronado's back then Zorro dismounts.]

Zorro [untying the blindfold]
The alcalde has informers everywhere.  It's only a matter of time before he finds you here.  You must go for your own safety.

Leonardo
Thank you, Señor Zorro.  Your belief in you innocence is very important to me.

Zorro
I'm rarely wrong about a man, amigo.

Leonardo
I won't forget you.

[He turns and starts running toward his left.  Zorro watches him run.  Felipe comes out from behind a tree and trots over to Zorro.]

Zorro
If only he knew you heard every single word he said.  Follow him at a distance [He pats Felipe's shoulder.]  and I'll guarantee he'll lead us to the jewel.

[Felipe runs off after Leonardo.  Zorro swings back upon Toronado's back and rides forward.]

[Exterior shot of Zorro riding Toronado down a tree covered hillside.]

[Exterior shot of the field where Mendoza and Ramone stand near the hole the lancers are still digging.]

Mendoza
Alcalde, the men need rest.

Ramone
They can have their rest when I have the jewel.

Zorro [holding up a green jewel while sitting astride Toronado]
Looking for something?

Ramone [whipping his head around to look at Zorro]
Where did you. . .?

Zorro
I told you it was buried at the south fork.  You chose not to listen and here you are, digging in the mud.

Ramone
Give me that jewel.

Zorro
A trade.  My life [He points to his chest, then holds up the jewel again.] for the jewel.

Ramone
I don't think your life is worth that much. [Zorro shrugs.] Very well, give me the jewel.

[Zorro tosses the jewel to Ramone who looks at it as does Mendoza.]

Ramone [to Mendoza while looking up at Zorro]
Kill him.

Zorro [pretending to be hurt]
Ah, you said you'd spare my life.

Ramone [waving his arm at the lancers in the hole]
Get him!

[Zorro rides Toronado straight at where Ramone and the lancers are standing, scattering them.  A couple of the lancers fall back down into the hole.]

Ramone [off camera]
Zorro!

[Zorro brings Toronado to a halt as Ramone stands in front of him, pointing a pistol.]

Ramone
Which do you prefer, in the heart or between the eyes?

Zorro [sticking his index finger into the pistol's barrel]
Neither, if it's all the same to you.

Ramone [through clenched teeth]
Remove you finger from my pistol.

Zorro
I think between the eyes is best, don't you?

[He punches Ramone between his eyes.  Ramone's eyes cross as he falls to the ground.  Zorro rides away, knocking down Mendoza.  The lancers struggle to get to their feet as Zorro rides father away.]

[Closeup shot of Leonardo as he looks worriedly at something in front of him.]

[Exterior shot of a small cave with a mountain lion pacing in front of it.  The mountain lion then goes inside the cave.]

[Closeup shot of Leonardo as a black gloved hand comes down on his left shoulder.  Leonardo turns around.]

Leonardo [sighing with relief]
Zorro!  But how did you. . .?

Zorro
I have bad news, my friend.  Toronado understood your confession perfectly.

Leonardo [incredulously]
He did?

[Zorro nods as Toronado snorts.]

Leonardo
But he's a horse.  How did he tell you? [He shakes his head.] What's the use. . .  Yes, it's over there.  However, I didn't count on our little friend there.

[Exterior shot of the mountain lion pacing outside its cave again.]

Zorro
Not so little and definitely not a friend.

[He slowly walks toward the mountain lion, carrying his whip.]

Leonardo [off camera]
To your right.  About six paces.  Under one of the large stones.

[Zorro unsheathes his saber as he inches closer to the mountain lion who is growling.]

Leonardo
Be careful, Señor.  He means business.

[Zorro cracks his whip at the mountain lion then overturns a rock with his right foot.  He lashes out with his whip again then overturns another stone, revealing a green jewel.  He stares down at it then cracks his whip at the mountain lion until it retreats back into its cave.  Zorro bends down and picks up the jewel then tucks it into his waistband.  He then sheathes his saber and slowly backs away as the mountain lion can be heard growling off camera.]

[Exterior shot of Zorro on Toronado's back and helping Leonardo get up on behind him, then riding away.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office as Ramone stands under the porch, both of his eyes black and swollen.]

Ramone [to a priest who is standing opposite him]
Padre, I'm sorry, you've come all this way for nothing.  The jewel has not been found.

Padre [cupping his hands]
Then I must return to Santa Barbara empty-handed.

Voices
Zorro!  It's Zorro!  Zorro!  Zorro!

[Zorro rides up to Ramone's office then comes to a halt in front of the priest.]

Zorro
Padre.  I believe you came for this. [He hands the jewel to the priest.] Leonardo Montez helped me retrieve it.

Ramone
Wait a minute.

[He turns and runs to his office door as Zorro smiles knowingly.]

[Interior shot of Ramone's office as Ramone opens the door and goes over to his desk.  He pulls off his right glove then opens a desk drawer.  He reaches into the drawer and grabs out a greenish blob with his right hand.  He drops it back into the drawer then starts to leave.  He puts his right hand down onto the desk and a piece of paper sticks to his hand.  He pulls the paper off his hand and throws it down in disgust.]

[Exterior shot of Ramone's office as he comes back outside and glares up at Zorro.]

Zorro
Heat has a strange effect on paste wax, don't you think?

[Ramone glares at him angrily.]

Zorro
Remember, Alcalde, all that glitters is not. . .  Ah, well, I'm sure you know the rest.

[Zorro turns Toronado around and rides off.  Ramone throws down his glove in disgust.  The priest smiles as he holds the jewel.  Zorro and Toronado ride to the pueblo gate then turn as Zorro waves.  They then turn back around and ride away.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the pueblo church.]

[Interior shot of the church as Leonardo sits on a bench with his hands tied together in front of him.]

[Exterior shot of the church as Zorro ties Toronado to a hitching post then walks up to a door.]

[Closeup shot of Leonardo as a door opens off camera.  He struggles to free his hands.  A dagger appears in front of him then Zorro walks past him and sits down on the bench next to him.]

Leonardo
Did you have to tie me up?  I would have waited for you.  Honestly.

Zorro
Somehow that doesn't quite ring true.

Leonardo
So, what happened?

Zorro
Well, Father Valdez has the jewel and is on his way back to Santa Barbara.

Leonardo
Was there. . .um. . . Was there a reward?

Zorro [warningly]
Leonardo. . .

Leonardo
I know, I know.  But I need money to get as far away from here as possible.

[Zorro cuts the ropes from Leonardo's wrist with the dagger.]

Zorro
The only place you're going, my friend, is straight back to jail.

Leonardo
What?  How could you do this to a fellow outlaw?

Zorro
There are no similarities between us whatsoever.  But I did tell Father Valdez that you helped me retrieve the sacred stone.  That may shorten your sentence.

Leonardo [sarcastically]
That's just splendid.  With luck, I'll be out in five years.

Zorro
Well, you did commit a crime and there's a price to be paid.

[The church bell starts ringing.]

Leonardo [suddenly frightened]
Not the alcalde?

Zorro
No, troops from Santa Barbara.  I must be off.  I told them you'd be waiting here at the mission.  Like a man.  [He taps Leonardo's arm with the dagger.] I hope if our paths cross again, we'll be on the same side?

Leonardo
I'll try.

Zorro
Stay well, my friend.

[He gets up and leaves.]

[Exterior shot of the church as Zorro comes out of the door and over to Toronado.]

[Interior shot of the church as a horse whinnies off camera and Leonardo stands up and looks out the window.]

[Exterior shot of outskirts of the pueblo as Zorro and Toronado ride off across the countryside.]

[Interior shot of the church as Leonardo turns away from the window and looks thoughtful.]
